Today’s photo tip is the first of many that will cover a “rule” of photography. We could start a firestorm of debate about how important rules are, photography is art, etc, etc. What I feel is most important to understand, especially for everyday or beginner photographers, is that it’s okay to break the rules if you do so intentionally. If it’s done by accident, I would bet that your photo will not be pleasing to the eye. And to do so intentionally, you need to know what the rules are first.

One of the most basic and important elements of composition is the Rule of Thirds. Following the Rule of Thirds adds visual interest to your photos. Here’s a simple breakdown:
1. Break your viewfinder into three sections horizontally and three sections vertically.
2. Don’t place your subject smack in the center!
3. Place your subject either on the intersecting lines or in one of the outer thirds.
4. If your subject is a person, keep their eyes in the top third of your frame.

Simple enough, but it’s one that I see a lot of people who take pictures of their families and friends breaking…by accident. Here are a couple of examples.

Centered subject:

Off centered subject (in the top right third):

Centered (in landscapes it’s the horizon that you should look at):

Rule of thirds:

So the next photo you take of your family or that random group of tourists, make sure their eyes are in the top third of the viewfinder. And the next gorgeous sunset you see, don’t divide your picture in half with the horizon–divide it into thirds.

Happy picture taking! May this glorious weather inspire you to get outside and enjoy nature. Thanks for stopping by! Chao,

Naomi

If you’ve followed my blog for any time, you’ve seen this girl before. As always, we had tons of fun and got some amazing shots! She put up with the cold (hey, it was above freezing, so nobody is allowed to complain) and staring towards the sun (there were no clouds and the shadows were harsh–what do you want?). Also, many thanks to my awesome assistant Liz, a wonderful girl and aspiring photographer. She helped with the lighting and had some great pose ideas as well!

I was beginning to think that moving to a warmer climate might not be such a bad idea. After 3 blizzards (2 of which were in February), record snowfall, and what seemed like a never ending winter, I was reminded of what it felt like to live in Maine. Maybe I could live without the whole changing of seasons thing.

But today, as I started to sit down on my warm front porch to write, I absolutely squealed with joy and ran inside, jumping up and down, to get my camera. Seriously. Until then, I had been wondering what I’d photograph today.

New life emerging from the deadness of winter. The sheer joy of seeing the first flowers after a long, snowy winter. Finally needing to roll the car windows down while driving. The sun warming my face once again. I’ve been reminded of why I love the changing of seasons. It’s fresh, new, and inspiring. Seeing those first flowers push their way up amongst the dead, brown leaves of last year brings new joy and renewed hope.

Take a deep breath today, and enjoy the beauty that’s all around you. Maybe even stick your knees in the mud and take a picture of the first flower you see.

I’m pretty sure I can’t do this, and I think I must be crazy for even trying. Maybe I’m on a high from being on vacation at home for a week. Maybe I was up too late on Tuesday night, reading too many inspiring photo blogs. I mean, honestly, taking a picture EVERY SINGLE DAY for a year? That’s 365 days. In a row. Consecutive.

Maybe…I’m really serious about wanting to improve my photography skills. And maybe I don’t want to not even try simply because I’m afraid I’ll fail.

So, inspired by Tasra and over 400 photographers who have joined her, I’m taking a year-long journey. In an effort to improve my photography by 300%, I’m going to do the following every day for the next 362 days (nope, I didn’t forget my calendar…I already started!):
-Take 1 photo
-Read 1 page in my camera manual
-Look at the work of other professional photogs

Maybe I’ll fail at capturing 1 image every single day. But I know that if I put at least half the effort I need into this project, I’ll succeed at improving my photography. And hopefully, I’ll succeed at inspiring at least one other person to just get out there and shoot.

*To check out my daily photos, look to the left sidebar or just go straight to my Flickr page.*
For now, here are a few runners-up from today!

Over the past year, all of these realizations have been solidified by the work of other amazing photographers. Jasmine Star has inspired me to follow my passion, not my fear, and to give–to always be looking for ways to give to others. I’ve been inspired by the folks at Help Portrait to help people change the way they see themselves and hold their heads high in confidence. I’m inspired and excited to be taking part in Photographers for Haiti, a nationwide fundraiser to help with the situation in Haiti. And Tasra Mar totally inspires me in her use of photography to love, encourage, and instill confidence in teen girls.

So I’m coming into my own, inspired with a new outlook on God’s calling, photography, and what it means to serve others, and I’m more excited than I’ve ever been. Photography is no longer in the box of selfish ambitions or careers because it is about who I am as a photographer and how I will use it to serve others.

*This is the end of my “blog therapy” series, as I like to call it. But it’s not the end of my story…I want to keep discovering, growing, becoming inspired, and hopefully, inspiring others. Who have you been inspired by in your life? I’d love to hear your story, too!*

I graduated from college, got married, started working at a bank, and had a plan to go back for my student teaching once my husband graduated; all the while, photography was drawing me. I’m not really sure of the chronology of events over the next couple of years, but bit by bit, God continued chipping away at that old paradigm I was stuck in: if I really wanted to serve Him and help others, I would choose a “noble” profession, which photography was not.

I picked up this somewhat controversial book by a somewhat controversial guy named Shane Claiborne. Just so happens that Shane also attended Eastern and was a co-founder of the Simple Way in Philly. So back to that somewhat controversial book he wrote–The Irresistible Revolution. Reading his words on vocation, on calling, was definitely an epiphany moment, and it came at such a pivotal time in my life. Though I was still too afraid to verbalize it, I was starting to figure out and really accept that I didn’t want to be a teacher. I felt I was disappointing a lot of people, that people looked at me and thought I wasted four years and a lot of money, that people wondered why I didn’t have all my career aspirations figured out yet, and that I had to constantly explain myself.

Shane pointed out that the ways in which people were called to Jesus’ work and ministry were varied. On the one hand, the disciples were called to drop what they were doing and do something completely different. On the other hand, some, such as the tax collector, were called to change the way they had been working. To stay in their career, but to redefine how they did it. He gave modern day examples: massage therapists who wash and massage the tired feet of the homeless; manicurists who visit nursing homes and visit with the ladies who have no visitors or family, enjoying their company and doing their nails; chiropractors who join Shane and his friends on the evenings of marches for peace and justice, to take care of the tired bodies after a long day of marching. These are just a few examples, but, Shane says, the calling is the same: “to love God and our neighbors with our whole lives, careers, and gifts” (p. 138).

During this period of my life, I was really struggling with the idea of calling. It weighed heavily on me that what I was doing was not what I studied, what I studied was not what I wanted to do, and what I thought I wanted to do I was too fearful to admit. For a little over a year, as I was going through all these frustrations, I was attending a small group with some amazing people. God was really transforming my life through this group that met in a little basement in someone’s home. One particular night was a culmination of small epiphany moments I’d been having in regards to calling.

A young man spoke to us that night. He said that we need to stop being so concerned with, “What is God calling me to do?” And start asking, “Who is God calling me to be?” That night, and the days following, a peace filled the spot where anxiety, fear, and worry had resided for so long. I finally had peace, knowing that I was following God’s calling–be a loving wife, a leader and good example for teens, and a servant who pours the love of God into those around me.

Throughout college, I began to really learn more about how my camera worked, and it opened up so many doors for creativity. I tried new things, failed, figured out why I failed, and tried again.

College was also the start of some epiphany moments, mostly while I was studying abroad in Costa Rica and taking yearly trips to the Dominican Republic. My heart was so entrenched in the lives of the people I met and the places I visited. There were times of laughter and joy, sorrow and tears, times of anger, times of peace. There were sights, sounds, smells, warm tropical breezes, bachata rhythms floating through the air on warm Caribbean nights, drum beats from the street pounding through my very core, aching muscles from tireless physical work, sweaty afternoon siestas. There was something in the core of me that wanted so badly to communicate what it felt like to be there…something I feel even the best writers cannot do with mere words. When I was there, I didn’t just take pictures; I attempted to photograph in a way that would communicate those stories. I wanted to do more than show a visual representation of a place; I wanted the viewer to see an image, and hear sounds, and feel the weather, and smell the smells. I was nowhere near the technical ability I needed, but my heart was in it, and it pushed me to keep trying.

While I was in Costa Rica, I saw a photographer for World Vision speak about what he does. It was the first time I was really exposed to the idea of a photographer working for a non-profit Christian organization. He was a photographer that was doing more than just taking pictures of people to make money. He wasn’t the one literally serving people when World Vision was working in a particular area. But he was using his gifts and his passion to capture the needs of the hurting in a photograph in such a way that moved people to give and support. In his own way, he was helping the hurting by helping World Vision raise the funds they needed in order to send people and supplies to the places and people that needed it.

This was certainly a little nugget for me to chew on..later I’d see that it was an important building block in a new paradigm.

My interest in photography goes back to high school when I got my first SLR camera. I carried that thing everywhere! I felt so cool when I could zoom in and out and had buttons I could play with. I tried a lot of creative things, like attempting to take shots of the moon, a candle surrounded by darkness, or close-ups of flowers. And you can imagine my frustration when I got the roll of film developed and the photos were totally blurry or unfocused. “This isn’t what I pictured in my head!” I didn’t know much about light, technique, or how a camera worked, but there was still something I loved, something that drove me to keep going…something about creating.

At the time, I also loved writing and enjoyed nature, so I put the three together and had this far-off, wild dream of becoming a photojournalist for National Geographic. But, eventually, I questioned myself and my intentions. I had such a passion and desire to truly help people and make a difference in this world. My assumptions about becoming a photographer were that it was something I would do simply because I enjoyed doing it, which seemed selfish to me. I remember thinking to myself, “How could I become a photographer when there are so many people in the world hurting and suffering?” How could I do something that wasn’t serving and helping? So, I chose a different path to walk down.

Hindsight is 20/20. Well, I do believe the fog is beginning to clear around a very transformative time in my life. A transformation that has taken many years…years in which God revealed things to me through various events in my life. People I’ve met, places I’ve been, emotions I’ve experienced. As I experienced them, I didn’t realize the impact they would have on my life. But, looking back, I can see those “epiphany moments” so clearly as they slowly chipped away at a paradigm I was cemented in.

According to dictionary.com (yes, that’s right–I don’t think I have an actual dictionary…or, at least, I don’t know where it is), a paradigm shift is a fundamental change in approach or assumption. So, friends, in hopes of perhaps inspiring or touching one person out there…I’ll share with you the story of my paradigm shift.

So, I’ve been keeping this one secret for awhile! Last fall, Jess asked me if I could take some shots of her and her siblings for a Christmas present for their mom. It was amazingly thoughtful of her, and I was so stoked to be a part of a special gift like that. (They hadn’t taken family photos since the kids were little!) The only problem was finding a day to do it since the weather was colder…but all three of them braved the cold for their mom! We got some great shots, and I had to be really stealth to get the proofs back to Jess, but we managed to keep everything under the mom radar.

Okay, enough gab…here are a couple of my favorites! (Let me know what you think of the flash gallery…thought I’d try something new!)
